Build your skills as a director with MIGA and the AICD

MIGA has partnered with the AICD and Board AdvanceR to offer members the opportunity to build and develop their skills as directors through completion of the Foundations of DirectorshipTM (Health) program.
 
Noting that many of our members are involved in healthcare businesses, research and innovation ventures, and senior management roles, this program is offered as an opportunity to build your skills and understanding of governance responsibilities, your role in building the financial health of your organisation, and the most effective strategies to apply while managing risk.

Meet the presenters

  • Governance for Directors – Alexandrea Cannon

    Alexandrea Cannon is an active director with experience in the private, not-for-profit and government sectors. She currently chairs SALA (South Australian Living Artists) and is a Director of COTA SA.
    Other recent governance roles include chair of SATAC, Credit Union SA, Leaders Institute of SA and SA Heart.
     
    Alexandrea is a former director of the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust, Country Arts Trusts in SA and Queensland, an accountancy and financial planning business and TAFE SA. She also served for five years as a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors State Council prior to commencing as a facilitator in 2017.
     
    Following a business background in international and national businesses in manufacturing, sales, financial services and the arts, she conducts board performance reviews, assists boards with CEO performance planning and coaches chairs, directors and CEOs.
     
    Alexandrea is accredited in several coaching and business performance programs and a variety of psychometric assessment tools.
     
    She has managed due diligence and merger integration teams at board and executive levels and been a visiting lecturer at Griffith University and the University of South Australia.
     
    Awarded an OAM for service to business in 2023 and previously recognised as one of Australia’s leading human resource management professionals, influencing the future direction of the discipline at a national level, she was awarded the AHRI Medal for her exemplary contribution.
  • Finance for Directors – Henry Botha

    Henry has more than 30 years’ experience in the finance industry and is a well-regarded presenter specialising in financial management. As an associate of Melbourne Business School, he delivers strategic finance on many programs in Australia and Malaysia. He has presented numerous training programs in Bangkok for the Thai Institute of Directors and the Australian Institute of Company Directors in Australia, Dubai, Singapore, Hong Kong and New Zealand. He also presents financial management workshops for executives in the private, government and not for profit sectors and is well known for simplifying finance with highly interesting and engaging examples.
     
    Previous directorships include:
    • Director and Chair of the Audit Committee of Medical Insurance Australia, an APRA regulated insurer providing professional indemnity insurance to doctors in Australia.
    • Chairman of CPR Pharma Services Pty Ltd, a private equity funded CRO, prior to it being sold to a Sydney based private equity fund.
    • Director of Levett Engineering Pty Ltd, a manufacturer of titanium parts for the Joint Strike Fighter Project, prior to it being sold to CHAMP now known as CPE.
  • Strategy and Risk for Directors – Rosina Hislop

    Rosina is an accomplished Board Director and national facilitator with the Australian Institute of Company Directors. She is an AICD Fellow and serves on the boards of organisations across health, education and aged care.
     
    A chartered accountant and former partner at Ernst & Young, Rosina has an executive background leading global top 100 companies in corporate strategy, finance, business model innovation and mergers and acquisitions. Rosina’s international experience with Ernst & Young includes working in the UK, Continental Europe, Asia and the USA. Rosina is passionate about using corporate governance to create enduring value for companies, their customers and society. Rosina is a frequent speaker and panellist at industry events for board directors on strategy and risk. 
     
    Rosina’s current board roles include: 
    • Deputy Chair ECH Inc
    • Chair of Seymour College 
    • Director of Dr Jones & Partners
    • Independent Chair of the Risk and Performance committee for the Department of Child Protection, Independent Chair of the Local Government Association, SA.
    • Previously: Chair, Governing Council, SA Health - Southern Adelaide Local Health Network.

    The program is designed for new and aspiring directors, senior executives, and managers wanting to gain a foundational knowledge of the duties and responsibilities of boards and directors in the health sector.
     
    For directors newly appointed to boards, anyone who might be interested in pursuing a career as a director, or for executives and managers who would like a better understanding of board processes, the Foundations of DirectorshipTM (Health) program gives you the essential information you need to know contextualised for health care. It offers the skills and knowledge that those new to directorships need to excel in their role from the outset.
  • What will you learn?

    The program covers all the key areas you will need to be across as a board director, including sessions on board duties, meeting processes, finance, risk and strategy.
     
    Upon completion of the program, you will be able to:
    • Identify the duties and responsibilities of a director 
    • Outline governance and board meeting processes 
    • Outline the director's role in evaluating financial statements
    • Identify the director's role in formulating and monitoring strategy, and identifying and assessing risk
    • Recognise the link between corporate strategy and financial performance.
  • What can you expect?

    During each day of the program you will undertake interactive working sessions facilitated by an experienced director, alongside a group of up-and-coming directors. The program uses relevant case studies to help you understand the nuts and bolts of directorship.
     
    The program consists of three courses run over three days with each day focusing on a different topic:
     
    Day 1: Governance for Directors
    • The Role of the Director and the Board
    • Introduction to Board Meetings and Governance
     
    Day 2: Risk and Strategy for Directors
    • Risk: Issues for Directors
    • Introduction to the Strategic Role of the Director
     
    Day 3: Finance for Directors
    • Introduction to Financial Statements for Directors
    • Assessing Financial Performance for Directors
     
    Duration
    • One day attendance for each course (3 days total)
    • There is also approximately 10 hours of pre-reading per course which must be completed before the program commences.
     
    Completion of each course will award attendees 10 Director Professional Development (DPD) points per course with an additional 5 DPD points awarded for successful completion of the assessment within 12 months.
  • Assessment and awards

    Participants who successfully complete and pass all three Foundations of DirectorshipTM (Health) multiple choice assessment quizzes will attain the Foundations of Directorship Certificate.
     
    The assessment is an opportunity for participants to consolidate their learning and to benchmark their understanding against the standard set by the AICD.
