MIGA Elective Grants Program

Following a recent review of the Student Elective Grants Program we have taken the decision to cease the Program in 2024. 

We understand the impact that our decision may have on your elective plans and appreciate your disappointment. 

This was a difficult decision, driven by a number of factors.  These include:
  • Increasing safety concerns for students undertaking electives in developing communities due to increased political instability
  • Commercialisation of elective placements in developing communities which has resulted in an influx of medical tourism where support for the community and the student’s learning experience have become secondary to the travel experience
  • Declining interest in the Program due to changing elective travel policies within some medical schools, based on Smartraveller travel advisories.
 
Having provided over $366,000 in funding since the inception of the Program in 2004, we are extremely proud of the assistance we have been able to provide to 112 medical students, developing communities and the positive impact the Program has had on both the students and those communities. 

However, as an important part of our medical community, we will be looking for new ways to support you on your path to becoming one of our amazing doctors of the future.  So watch this space!
